Peter Haynes writes:-
On 28th March 2008, Peter Haynes (1972-78) was sworn in as Queen’s Counsel at a ceremony at Westminster Hall. Harriet Porter (1976-78) was one of the guests at the reception held in the Temple, London. It was an occasion of ridiculous pomp and ceremony, involving Peter dressing up in a full-bottomed wig, silk stockings and buckled shoes.
Harriet arrived clutching a copy of a photograph of the two of us standing outside Park House in 1977 or 1978. (visible here) Neither of us could remember the photo being taken but the temptation to try and replicate it 30 years later was irresistible.
I think secretly we were both rather proud of the fact that we hadn’t aged too badly!
However, one of the physiological mysteries is that between 1978 and 2008, either I have shrunk or Harriet has grown! She was not wearing appreciable heels in the modern photo and we were standing on level ground in both and yet whilst she appears a good 4 inches shorter than me aged 17, we are now apparently about the same height. Strange!
Harriet and I have remained in infrequent contact over the last 30 years. She lives with her husband, and 14 year old son in South London, working in design. I am married with 1 son aged 12. I currently oscillate between my family home in Birmingham and the Netherlands where I practice international criminal law
